“Our goal is to create awareness in our community about the obesity epidemic, and to give families the tools and resources they need to live a more active and healthy life style.” said Denise Righetti, Let’s Move Boca chairperson.
A local group of advocates has joined together on a campaign to fight this epidemic through the creation of an annual Health/Wellness Fair in Palm Beach County, Florida. This year’s event, Let’s Move Boca, will be held at Royal Palm Place in Downtown Boca, and will showcase healthy cooking demonstrations, fitness classes, nutrition presentations, fun activities for kids and adults, as well as a vendor fair.
Not only is the event a great way for the South Florida community to get active and learn about healthy lifestyles, but 100% of the proceeds will go towards sustaining health and wellness programs in the community throughout the year through the local non-profit FLIPANY (Florida Introduces Physical Activity and Nutrition to Youth). FLIPANY delivers nutrition education and physical activity programs in Palm Beach County to low-income youth, families, and seniors. “I am very thankful for Let’s Move Boca and am excited about spreading the word to Palm Beach County residents about getting and staying healthy!”, said Lynne Kunins, FLIPANY’s Executive Director.
We are pleased to announce that we are also teaming up with the Junior League of Boca Raton, whose committee C.H.O.W. (Conquering Hunger Our Way) is involved in a number of activities related to nutrition education and hunger, and will be manning a booth to collect healthy food donations as well as providing a healthy granola making station. Ford Escapes Hunger has jumped on the bandwagon as well by promising to pledge 40 free meals to Feeding South Florida for each attendee who registers to win a Ford Escape, which will be on display at the event. Cooking Matters, a program of Share our Strength, a groundbreaking nutrition-education program that connects families with food by teaching them how to prepare healthy, tasty meals on a limited budget, will also have a booth at Let’s Move Boca. Professional chefs and nutritionist experts volunteer their time and expertise to lead hands-on courses that show adults, teens and kids how to purchase and prepare nutritious foods in healthful, safe and tasty ways. School Administrators, local Chefs and Nutrition experts will come to the Cooking Matters booth to register and get paired up with one another to participate in their specialized nutrition curricula.
